National Child Day (November 20, 2022)

November 20th is National Child Day in Canada, marking the adoption of the two historic events:

  • United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child (November 20, 1959); and
  • United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (November 20, 1989).

This year’s theme is the right to participate. A child’s right to participate is a main pillar to achieving self-actualization. Children have the right to participate in activities such as play, family, culture, and learning. They also have the right to participate when decisions are made about them. Empowering young people from all backgrounds to participate in decision-making and activities helps grow their voice and confidence.
